Donald Trump wants the UK to be weaker – he’s the last person we should look to for advice on Brexit

The apparently nonsensical and undiplomatic utterings of Donald Trump should be listened to with great interest.

While the nationalists crow at the support for their isolationist chiefs, they do not realise that Trump is actively supporting the UK’s demise.

Trump fears an economically strong Europe. With a greater collective GDP and less debt than the US, the growing potential for the EU as a trading bloc is something to fear for the US and China. Brexit represents a gift for the US and Chinese economies.

Without the UK, Europe is weaker, and without the EU the UK is irrelevant; yet so many people are enduringly duped by our future leaders whose understanding of global economics is negligible, and Trump supporting them should be a message of fear, not rejoicing.

Has Trump heard what BoJo said about him?

It would be a good idea to play Boris Johnson’s Twitter video at various points along Trump’s ceremonial route. Johnson was less than complimentary and stated clearly Trump was unfit to be president in 2015. It might deflate Johnson’s PM ambitions and puncture Trump’s ego.

Tory leadership contest

Presumably P Norsworthy (Letters, 1 June) would support Boris Johnson’s leadership bid, the salesman who sold the dodgy Brexit vehicle to the British public in the first place.

I’d certainly argue that I’d rather not buy a car at all from these “salespeople” turned politicians; his analogy precisely identifies the problem.

Gun law reform

Yet another gun massacre in the USA, and you can’t be optimistic that congress will legislate for gun restrictions per se. But how about this for a market-based solution? Legislate to make gun owners take out public liability insurance.

I, as a musician, have to have public liability insurance in case my equipment kills someone. If gun owners had to do the same, the insurance industry would soon regulate the market. Simples!

Tech magic won’t solve the border issue

Once again Sajid Javid has invoked the blessed “tech fairies” to resolve the Northern Ireland-Brexit issue (Brexit news: Sajid Javid says he would be prepared to leave EU with no deal on 31 October).

When will anyone who is not a technologist realise that you cannot automate something that is not defined and Brexit, deal or no deal, is the biggest, most undefined thing around today?

While you are at it, can someone tell him that technology will not save him and when it doesn’t... please do not blame the technologists you gave that poisoned chalice to.
