Some people may have gained the idea from my opinion about the state of black politics in Britain ( Opinion, 1 September) that I was quoting Darcus Howe as saying that 'in this jungle it's every man or woman for themselves'. I'm sorry if I inadvertently gave that impression. His views were, I think, made clearer in my Radio 4 documentary, where he argued that black Britons have what he calls an 'ease of presence' in the UK. Black public figures are all too often misunderstood. I would not wish to add to the confusion.
