We hear reaction to this year’s Press Awards, but there's only so much we can do with the submissions we receive

The Society of Editors works hard to make sure the judging panels are representative of gender and other diversity, but we are limited by what we are given for consideration

It is of course true that there are many brilliant women journalists writing for and editing newspapers and other news platforms across the UK.

The Society of Editors Press Awards seek to identify the best journalism as viewed by a broad cross section of judges nominated by national newspapers and with a majority gathered from other parts of the media and beyond.

We work hard to make sure the judging panels are representative of gender and other diversity. Starting last year we included the Women in Journalism Georgina Henry Award for Innovation, which only women can enter.

Entries are invited from across the media. We ask judges to do their best to set aside loyalties and their personal preferences but their votes can only be based on submissions.

We of course hear reaction to this year’s shortlists but, sadly, the fact is that too few submissions are received from or on behalf of women journalists and in some categories the entirety of the entries we receive are on behalf of male journalists.

We welcome entries from all journalists and encourage those who may decide who should be entered to reflect the qualities of the teams who produce the best journalism in the world.
