Weather warnings are in place for rain and snow in Scotland

The UK is set to see a milder start to the week as a front of warm air pushes in from the Atlantic. This will bring with it a cloudy day on Monday for most of the UK with the potential for some outbreaks of rain in Scotland and the north of England.

Rain in northern Scotland will be particularly heavy and persistent and some of it could turn to snow across the Highlands and Grampians. This is due to northerly winds bringing colder air in from the North Sea.

A Met Office yellow weather warning is currently in place for rain in western Scotland and snow in the highlands. Both will remain in place until Monday evening.

The rain will move southwards over the course of Monday, eventually clearing from Scotland and reaching southern England by the evening. It will be accompanied by some gentle westerly winds.

Tuesday will start bright, dry and slightly colder than Monday in the north of the UK with temperatures around 2C-6C.

Heavy cloud means the southwest of England will see much milder highs of 10C. There will be more cloud for Northern Ireland and light rain in the south of England.

Wednesday will see another band of rain push in, this time from the west. Rain will be heaviest in Northern Ireland and Wales before moving into northern England and Scotland as the day goes on. Scotland may also see some snow fall on higher ground.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be divided north south with highs of 4C in the north of the UK and up to 11C in the southwest.
