White Christmas confirmed by Met Office

Snowfall reported in Humberside and Suffolk

Early morning snowfall has been recorded in parts of the UK, with the Met Office declaring it a White Christmas.

Reports of snow had come in from Leconfield in Humberside and Wattisham in Suffolk as of 5am on Christmas morning.

Alex Burkill, a meteorologist at the Met Office, had said on Thursday: “Christmas Eve night into Christmas Day is going to be very cold, with harsh widespread frost first thing Christmas morning.

“So it could be a ‘white’ Christmas in as much as lots of people are going to wake up to a frost.

“They’ll be very light, scattered, not everywhere will see them by any means, and for most areas it’s going to be a pretty dry day, just cold, but there is a chance we could see a few showers of snow across eastern parts of England, particularly early on Christmas Day.”

Midday on 25 December will see temperatures in low single figures, with the mercury across England showing a range of 2-5C, but it will feel like a much colder -1 to 1 degree for most.

Further north, it will continue to have the same cold temperature range, but with cloudier conditions and outbreaks of rain that will develop over parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland this afternoon.

Scotland will be some seeing temperatures slightly higher, with southern Scotland having highs of 8C. It is likely to feel at least 4C colder, though, so everywhere will be able to experience a cold snap on Christmas Day.

The evening will bring cloud and rain over Scotland and Northern Ireland, which will move southwards and be confined to southern UK by the end of the night.

Showers will then travel into the north and the night will turn windier.

Boxing Day will see that cloud coverage remain in the south of England with the morning bringing patchy rain before brightening up later. The north of England and Scotland will also see rain in the morning and it will become much windier.
