Brexit Britain: Photographer questions national identity in latest exhibition

Martin Parr's news work examines national identity in wake of vote to leave EU

Having spent his life capturing ordinary life in his own wry and insightful manner, Martin Parr has turned his eye to Brexit Britain.

His new exhibition Only Human, on show at the National Portrait Gallery in London from March 7 – May 27, features new and previously unseen work from the celebrated Magnum photographer.

“One of the main themes is British identity and given March 2019 is when we are supposedly leaving the European Union, the timing could not be better,” he said.

That identity is thoroughly examined from working life to leisure and there is even a pop up cafe modelled on the traditional British “caff", alongside work from some of his long term projects on show.

Portraits of famous people including the footballer Pele and artist Tracey Emin sit alongside photographs from his ongoing study of the British establishment.

The exhibition’s curator D. Philip Prodger said the exhibition "will make you think, and leave you with a smile on your face.”
