Format Festival: Street photography steals the show

Derby will play host to the cream of the world’s contemporary photography tomorrow for the Format International Photography Festival.

More than 3,000 works by over 300 artists and photographers will go on show at venues and outside spaces around the city.

Street photography seems to be the genre de jour, with a major outdoor show of 140 large-scale street photos by seven Magnum photographers forming the centre piece of the month-long festival.

Bruce Gilden, also a Magnum photographer, turned his lens on the people of Derby for a portrait of the city’s streets which will be shown at the Derby Museum & Art Gallery.

The QUAD gallery brings together around 20 contemporary street photographers for its exhibition, Right Here, Right Now.

Another highlight is a showcase of 60 works by street photography collective In-Public, alongside a film by its founder Nick Turpin which explores the divergent approaches to photography explored by its members.

Established in 2004, it is one of the UK’s biggest international festivals of photography and new media. This year’s show was curated by Louise Clements and organised by QUAD in partnership with the local council.
