Cate Blanchett transforms into homeless man for art exhibition

She previously played a man in the film I'm Not There

Cate Blanchett, queen of transformations, is unrecognisable as a bedraggled male character in a new art project in her hometown of Melbourne, Australia.

The cut and bruised man with scraggly beard and beanie was just one look she was given during ‘Manifesto’, a video installation by German artist Julian Rosefeldt.

"You expand my sense of what's possible on the screen through your extraordinary work,” she told him while speaking at New York’s MoMA this week.

Other characters included a modern dance instructor, rocker and schoolteacher.

It’s not the first time Blanchett has blurred gender identity for art, having previously played Bob Dylan in the film I’m Not There.

She is currently starring alongside Rooney Mara in the Oscar-tipped Carol.

The 'Manifesto' exhibition opens at the Australian Centre For The Moving Image on 9 December.
