How many commonly misspelled words can you get right? Take the quiz
Spelling is a contentious subject in the UK. Some people think you can get by using Spellcheck or checking the correct word on your phone, while others think it’s still an essential skill.
Studies have revealed many adults are still stumped when it comes to writing down common words.
In October 2014 it was revealed that half of Britons were unable to spell “fluorescent” without spellcheck, while more than one in five would panic if they found themselves without spellchecking technology.
The list of most commonly misspelled words included “questionnaire”, “rhythm” and “conscience”, while “restaurant”, “guarantee” and “occurrence” also proved difficult for many.
Just under a quarter of people admitted they had been embarrassed by a spelling mistake made at work, and one in five said they tended to Google a word to check its correct spelling.
With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of words that are often misspelled so readers can test themselves.
