This popular, relaxed bookstore will be holding the first of its regular Saturday-morning storytime sessions of 1999 on the topical subject of (above). Storytime lasts about one-and-a-half hours and takes place in the children's department.

Build an Igloo

You can have a go at making your very own snow home as part of the museum's special holiday activities on the subject of Polar Science.

Whose New Year Is It Anyway?

Old Royal Observatory, Park Row, Greenwich (0181-312 6565). Today and tomorrow 1.30 and 3.30pm. Entry included in admission of pounds 5 adults and pounds 2.50 children.

Come to the centre of all world time and the official starting point for the new Millennium to learn about the development of calendars across the world. Suitable for seven years and above. Entry to the observatory (below) also entitles you to visit the Queen's House and the Maritime Museum and return for free within a year.
