Borderlines May Festival offers a new high for film fans

These days we're used to watching films in unusual venues but Shobdon Airfield, home of Herefordshire Aero Club and originally a training base for Second World War glider pilots, is far more special than most. As part of the forthcoming Borderlines May Festival, a series of flight-themed films will be screened in one of the 1930s hangars, along with the chance to take trial flights in a two-seater Cessna plane.

Films include Powell and Pressburger's classic A Matter of Life and Death, Casablanca and A Bridge Too Far, plus Wartime Secrets, a documentary about a secret Hereford factory that used to make parts for Spitfires and bombers planes, which has been put together from archive film and interviews with the factory workers' families.

There will also be an outdoor screening of The Artist on the lawn of Berrington Hall, with the backdrop of the Capability Brown-designed landscape, and French-themed food and drinks. Other events include an evening of film soundtracks such as Lord of the Rings and The Godfather, performed by music ensemble Fordante at Hellens Manor, and a 22-seater Moviebus in the town of Putley, which will be showing local archive films, to tie in with the Big Apple festival.
