'It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances'

Earlier this year, rumours were running rampant on the internet about a sequel to Beetlejuice, with dozens of media outlets - including ourselves - that director Tim Burton had confirmed the film was going ahead.

However, in an actual interview with the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory director, Burton confirmed he had spoken to star Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder but “there’s nothing concrete yet”.

“I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona,” he told Collider. “I’ve talked to a few people. It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not the Beetlejuice trilogy.

“So it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”

While he hasn’t completely rubbished the idea of a sequel, it looks like it is going to take an awfully good story to get Burton to revisit the classic tale.

Notably, last year, Ryder seemingly confirmed she would be reprising her role in the sequel, something that has obviously not materialised yet. She last appeared on the big screen in Michael Almereyda’s Experimenter alongside Peter Sarsgaard.

In other Beetlejuice news, there is a bar in New York opening which is entirely dedicated to Tim Burton and his films.
