Black Panther will not be an origin story, Captain Marvel will be, says Kevin Feige

'His standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world'

Thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe containing umpteen sequels, origin stories have been less regular in recent years. Just look at their post The Avengers output; out of the six Phase Two films (not including Captain America: Civil War, a sequel), four were sequels.

We’re due another origin story and - thanks to Doctor Strange - we’re getting one. However, despite Black Panther being the titular hero’s first solo film, it will not necessarily act as an origin story.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige told CinemaBlend: “Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War”, Feige said. “But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw.”

Notably, he confirmed that the upcoming, Brie Larson-starring Captain Marvel will be an origin story, saying: “Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It’s an origin story from the start.”

Marvel’s next blockbuster film will be Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch playing the titular character. Director Scott Derrickson recently revealed the film will have a much darker tone to other films in the series, while a journalist who witnessed 15-minutes of footage described what they witnessed.
