On Body and Soul exclusive trailer: Hungary's Foreign Language Oscar entry is a love story played out in dreams

The film also snapped up the coveted Golden Bear at this year's Berlin Film Festival

Hungary's entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2018 Oscars is a love story told through dreams.

On Body and Soul follows Endre (Géza Morcsányi) and Mária (Alexandra Borbély), two introverts who work at a slaughterhouse, who discover that they share the same dream every night, meeting as two deer in a forest.

However, the pair find they simply can't connect on such an intimate level in real life; their struggle to recreate their love in broad daylight unfolds into a strange misfit romance, though their whismsy is sometimes undercut by the harsh realities of the world.

The film marks a major comeback for director Ildikó Enyedi, who won the Caméra d'Or award for her second feature Az én XX. századom in 1989; though she's since directed a further six features, On Body and Soul marks her first output in nearly 10 years.

With its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, On Body and Soul snapped up the Golden Bear, alongside the FIPRESCI Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. Could it go the distance at next year's Academy Awards? That's yet to be seen, but the film's trailer promises a fascinating, unusual look at the nature of loneliness.

On Body and Soul will hit UK cinemas on 22 September.
