Oscar-winning composer John Williams is to return to score Star Wars: Episode VII, it has been announced.

It was confirmed that Williams, who has composed scores for all six films in the George Lucas franchise, would be working on the new JJ Abrams helmed film, at a Star Wars fan event in Germany.

Williams said he was "happy to be continuing to be part of the whole fun".

A further three Star Wars movies and several spin-off films are in the pipeline following the $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney last year.

In an interview with StarWars.com Williams said he was still in the dark about the storyline of Episode VII.

"I haven't seen the script, so the story is still unknown to me, but I can't image there will not be some references to the existing stories that would make appropriate use of some of the earlier themes," he said.

In April Abrams, who has also directed the rebooted Star Trek franchise, hinted that he would like Williams to score his Star Wars film.

Williams, who created famous scores for E.T, Jaws and Lincoln, has won five Oscars during his 60-year career.

Star Wars: Episode VII, which is set to include a number of the saga's original castmembers including Carrie Fisher, is slated for release in 2015.
