A documentary about the ‘black male crisis’ in the US is in the works from Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg.
The director has teamed-up with African American actor Nate Parker to make a film exploring the social isolation of young black men in the US after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson , Missouri in August.
The filmmakers set up an Indiegogo campaign this week to raise money for the project after the grand jury decided not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson despite fatally shooting Brown.
A statement on the campaign’s page reads: “Americans needs to take action. Black lives matter. All lives matter and we can’t tell their stories and help America changes its values without your help.”
The project is hoping to raise $25,000 by 5 January 2015. The filmmakers have already shot footage in Ferguson, but are asking for more funds to film additional scenes.
The film will tell the story of the ‘black male crisis’ through interviews, news excerpts and historical footage.

The Indiegogo page states Parker will set out on a “journey of investigation” by “ventur[ing] into black communities to speak to various stakeholders about the crisis facing these men.”
It will also explore how America’s history has impacted on the current 'crisis'.
“We will create a visual timeline of a systemic conditioning that will provide the viewer proper context for post-Civil Rights America, where – in truth – very little has changed from times long past,” the Indiegogo page states.
Berg and Parker have teamed up with writer-director Matthew Cooke to work on the project.
Berg was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 for her documentary Deliver Us From Evil , about a Catholic priest who tried to cover up his rape of dozens of children in the US.
Parker recently appeared alongside Liam Neeson in Non-Stop and has also starred in Red Tails and The Great Debaters .
