Let the glitz and glamour of awards season begin

When are they taking place?

This year’s Golden Globes will be held on Sunday 10 January at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

What time does it start?

It all kicks off at 8pm ET, or 1am on Monday morning in the UK.

How can I watch it?

Sadly those of us in the UK are unable to watch the Globes as they happen but US film fans can tune into NBC from 7pm ET when the red carpet pre-show begins. Those wishing to watch the ceremony online can do so thanks to NBC and E! Online.

Who is hosting?

Ricky Gervais is returning for a fourth stint as host after Tina Fey and Amy Poehler passed up the high-pressure role after cracking the funnies for three years straight. Gervais has already apologised for the offence he will inevitably cause come Sunday.

Who is presenting?

Eddie Redmayne, JK Simmons, Amy Adams, Patricia Arquette, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jim Carrey, Channing Tatum, Olivia Wilde, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Mel Gibson have all been announced so far, with more to come.

Who is going to win?

It’s tricky to predict which way many of the categories will go this year, but there seem to be a few dead certs (or so we think!).

The Big Short will surely take Best Film, Musical or Comedy, with Best Film, Drama is expected to go to Spotlight.

The Best Actress, Drama group is the most crowded of 2016, will all five nominees putting in spectacular performances. Cate Blanchett or Rooney Mara are arguably the favourites for Carol, but Brie Larson has been the name on everybody’s lips for Room.

Leonardo DiCaprio is tipped to finally win his first Oscar for The Revenant and it’s likely the Globes will give him the Best Actor, Drama gong too. Over in the comedy category, Steve Carell in The Big Short and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy seem the most likely choices.

Elsewhere, Alicia Vikander is the hot bet for Best Supporting Actress for Ex Machina, while Idris Elba could easily take Best Supporting Actor for Beasts of No Nation.

Best Director is another closely-fought category with Todd Haynes our outsider prediction for Carol, followed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for The Revenant.

Over to the television side, Game of Thrones is sure to dominate along with Mr Robot, Transparent, Empire and Fargo touted to win big.
