It features several kickass stunts, including cars parachuting from a plane, and a car making the leap from one Abu Dhabi skyscraper to another – twice. It also adheres to the old principle of leaving audiences wanting more: more Vin Diesel.

Diesel has predicted that his latest film, Fast & Furious 7, will “probably” win Best Picture at next year’s Oscars. In the meantime, he will have to make do with the award for Best Trailer at the 16th annual Golden Trailer Awards.

The seventh film in the turbo-fuelled franchise, which also took top honours in the GTAs’ action category in Beverly Hills, was released last month and has already made close to $1.5bn (£986m) worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It features the final performance from Diesel’s friend and perennial co-star, Paul Walker, who died in an off-set car accident midway through production.

The winning trailer, entitled “Family”, was cut by the film advertising firm AV Squad, and emphasises the fraternal bond between members of the on-screen gang of petrolheads.

There are 78 GTA categories, though only 20 are handed out on awards night.

The latest Marvel film, Avengers: Age of Ultron, triumphed in the summer blockbuster category; Boyhood took best independent movie trailer; Selma best drama trailer; and American Sniper best thriller trailer.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Inherent Vice won the Don LaFontaine award for best voice-over, named after the late Don LaFontaine, whose catchphrase “In a world...” earned him the nickname “The Voice of God”.
