Marvel's Spider-Man reboot: Comedy writers with questionable CV confirmed to be working on movie

Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have previously worked on Vacation, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Horrible Bosses

Everyone thought that Peter Parker’s bad luck was up when the news was broke that he was going to feature in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, but perhaps it isn't.

The Spider-Man franchise is soon to be rebooted once again, with Tom Holland as the teenager in spandex, and the writers behind it have finally revealed themselves.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were promoting their reboot of National Lampoon's Vacation when they confirmed rumours they were writing the next Spidey script.

“We can finally acknowledge that," Daley told NPR. “This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it."

Let’s take a little look at these guys credential to make sure they’ll do the hero justice, shall we? A quick look at the not-so-well received features they've worked on: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, a film starring Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, was dubbed “Hollywood’s biggest box office bomb of 2013”. Horrible Bosses 2, the relatively unfunny sequel to what was already a questionable movie, currently holds 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Then there's the recent Vactaion reboot, a film that has already been described by Variety as being “miserably unfunny, mean-spirited and just plain wrong”.

Should we be sceptical? The duo did, after all, write the original Horrible Bosses and had a good go at making a decent sequel to Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. And Marvel have done a good job of picking relatively unknown directors and writers to produce excellent screenplays, for example, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Speaking about the Spider-man reboot, the duo explained: "He's a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he's an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have."

We’ll have to wait until 2017 to see if they can pull off a good Spider-Man movie.
