Next month will see the announcement of the 2017 Oscar nominations but, before then, Academy members will have to whittle the Best Picture candidates down from a staggering 336.
As you can image, the full list of contenders - which appeared on the Oscars website on Wednesday (21 December) - features some awards favourites alongside some, er, not so impressive releases.
There's La La Land , Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea , all of which are doing well awards-wise, but it's safe to say that some films to feature on the list probably won't get mentioned next month. See: Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie , Bad Santa 2 , Inferno , Storks and new release Passengers which has been getting a rough ride from critics following its release this week.
Films that are eligible for the Oscars must open in a commercial motion picture theatre in Los Angeles - with a minimum run of seven consecutive days - by the stroke of midnight on 31 December.
Academy rule state that a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film or in a qualifying digital format.

Plot: Story details are minimal as of now, but Thor's third return to screen has already been teased to feature a loose adaptation of the famous 'Planet Hulk' storyline.

Plot: A biologist's husband disappears. She thus puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone, but does not quite find what she's expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor.

Plot: The story of a young boy in the Midwest is told simultaneously with a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years ago as they both seek the same mysterious connection.

K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

His parents' struggle to free their son becomes part of a larger political battle that pits the Papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.

Cast: Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin, and Oscar Isaac
Plot: A crime mystery set in the quiet family town of Suburbicon during the 1950s, where the best and worst of humanity is hilariously reflected through the deeds of seemingly ordinary people. When a home invasion turns deadly, a picture-perfect family turns to blackmail, revenge and betrayal.
