If you were worried that Sam Smith’s theme song for the upcoming James Bond film Spectre wouldn't sound like a James Bond theme song, worry no more.

The singer - who shot to fame when his performance on the dance track "Latch", produced by Disclosure - has released a 15 second teaser from the upcoming track, titled “Writing’s on the Wall”, and it could possibly be the most James Bond-esque 15 seconds of orchestra music ever released.

Posting the snippet on Twitter, Smith wrote: "4 days!! Thanks to everyone pre-ordering, can't wait for you to hear 'Writing's On The Wall’". The full song will be available 25 September. Listen to the clip below.

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw on his Radio 1 breakfast show, Smith said: “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line-up of some of my biggest musical inspirations.

The “Lay Me Down” hitmaker played down his role in the film for months, telling one reporter that Ellie Goulding would actually be singing the theme song.

"I'm so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been top secret mission of my own,” he continued. “I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script and they said, 'Have a go at the song'."

"It's the quickest I've ever written a song, it took 20 minutes. They loved it! I love the song so much.”

Spectre is due for release in the UK on 26 October. Daniel Craig is back in the lead as Bond, with Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci, Ralph Fiennes, Lea Seydoux and Naomie Harris also starring.
