Star Wars: The Force Awakens beaten at the Japan box office by Yo-Kai Watch 2

The full name of the film is Yo-Kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!

We all know Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been a phenomenal success worldwide.

It’s debut weekend at the box office saw it topple Jurassic World’s previous global record, but not everywhere around the world has been taken by Star Wars fever.

In Japan - who measure who is at their box office by number of tickets bought rather than profit made - the latest part of the sci-fi saga came second to Yo-Kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!, the second movie based on the popular video game Yo-Kai Watch.

The film sold 975,000 tickets compared to Star Wars’ mere 800,000. However, if we account for profit made by each film, Star Wars would still be on top, having made $10.3 million to Yo-Kai Watch’s $8.71 million.

The reason for the big profit difference? The majority of people going to see Yo-Kai Watch were children, unlike those attending Star Wars who were mainly grown men.

In other Star Wars news, it has been revealed that a character who survived The Force Awakens was not originally meant to, but the actor persuaded JJ Abrams to keep them in the film.
