A fourth Matrix film is happening with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie Ann Moss returning, as well as another star from the original trilogy.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros and director Lana Wachowski are hoping to bring back Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe in the new film.

The character made her debut in The Matrix Reloaded.

It’s also been announced that Neil Patrick Harris will be joining the cast. It will be the How I Met Your Mother star’s biggest film role to date having had appearances in Gone Girl (2014) and Downsizing (2017).

This news follows reports that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II – who will next be seen in HBO’s Watchmen – has a role in the film, potentially as a young version of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus.

Plot details are currently unknown about the project, which will go into production in 2020.

Rumours surrounding a new Matrix film began swirling when John Wick director Chad Stahelski let slip that the Wachowskis were planning a fourth film, although his comments were later claimed to be “hypothetical”.

Reeves wasn’t the first choice to play Neo in the Matrix trilogy, which ended with The Matrix Revolutions in 2003: Will Smith was approached for the role and recently revealed why he turned it down.
