Upcoming film festivals to present Tigers, Dragons and Bear Awards

With the Sundance Film Festival kicking off the year's cinema competitions on January 21, the film industry heads to the ski slopes of Park City, Utah to see the films with buzz and await the influential awards, while other can keep up at youtube.com/sff, and sundance.org/festival. But it's not the only film festival taking place in the weeks ahead:

Rotterdam International Film Festival
Rotterdam, Netherlands
January 27-February 7
International and independent films vie for the Tiger Awards with many of the 3,000 attendees joining the CineMart, which runs concurrently. This Dutch event is a cineaste's favorite for its fine programming of art films as well as art exhibits. www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/nl/

Göteborg International Film Festival
Gothenburg, Sweden
January 29-February 8
The focal point of Scandinavian cinema along with the Nordic Film Market, Göteborg features premieres of films competing for the Dragon Award and the Ingmar Bergman International Debut. Sharing is 2010's theme and Africa is the focus throughout the screenings, seminars and even the parties.

Santa Barbara International Film Festival

February 4-11
The 25th anniversary of the festival celebrates with tributes to a host of guests including James Cameron who receives the Modern Master Award, Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), actors Julianne Moore, Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci, Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Carey Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe, and more. Among the screenings, debuts of Latin, Asian and family fare are scheduled, and panel discussions with directors, script writers, producers, and women in the film business.

Boulder International Film Festival

The 6th annual event honors Golden Globes and Emmy winner Alec Baldwin ( 30 Rock, It's Complicated), co-host of the 2010 Academy Awards. Besides screenings for 13,000 attendees, the festival awards the best animated, documentary, shorts, and independent features and hosts sessions with filmmakers.

Berlinale: Berlin International Film Festival

After Cannes and Venice, the BIFF is the largest film event in Europe, showcasing more than 400 movies from around the world. It celebrates its 60th anniversary with a live public premiere of the restored Metropolis by Fritz Lang will transmit from the Brandenburg Gate. The Silver and Gold Bear Award jury is presided over by Werner Herzog in 2010. Attracting over 200,000 film aficionados and filmmakers, also attending the European Film Market, the screenings include Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer and Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island as well as independent, experimental and children's films. It also hosts panel discussions, exhibitions, and parties.
