Perhaps he knew he’d lose out to Eddie, or perhaps he just wanted to make sure the free booze didn’t run out. Either way Benedict Cumberbatch came prepared bringing his own hip flask to the Academy Awards ceremony.

And by the looks of things he wasn’t particularly happy, mouthing “Go away!” after taking a swig.

And the award for most embarrassed success story of the night goes to Eddie Redmayne, who clearly didn’t want to stick around triumphantly holding up his best actor gong.

This year’s most infamous Academy Award snubbee (no, not Selma) got its own back as statuettes made of Lego (oh got it, The Lego Movie!) were grabbed greedily by attendees during theme song “Everything Is Awesome”. Emma Stone looked particularly thrilled with hers.

David Oyelowo’s hand waggle perfectly, and succinctly, expressed his feelings about Neil Patrick Harris’ hosting skills.

Oscars darling Meryl Streep was on her feet whooping and pointing with conviction during Patricia Arquette’s acceptance speech in which she called on for women’s “wage equality once and for all”.

Somebody hand Chris Pine a tissue. So moving was Common and John Legend’s performance of their Selma song "Glory” that the Star Trek actor got all emotional.

Julie Andrews and Lady Gaga on stage TOGETHER. The hills are alive with the sound of minds exploding?

And here’s another one of Eddie, because he was just so excited to have won.
