On the surface, nothing much happens in Mike Leigh's latest comedy-drama except that a husband and wife (Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen) host four meals, one for each season of the year.
But if they're content with their uneventful existence, their friends (including Lesley Manville) aren't so fortunate. It's a devastating treatise on ageing, loneliness, and the strokes of luck that separate a happy life from a sad one.
