Along with The Beguiled, this is Clint Eastwood's creepiest, most unnerving Western. Clint's ghost returns to the ghastly town of Lagos where he was persecuted and murdered. In the first 20 minutes he manages three murders and one rape – on the back of which the craven townfolk hire him to protect them from three gunslingers just out of jail. It's exquisitely constructed and the bar scene is a doozy: “I'm faster than you'll ever live to be.” However, the sentiments are often muddled and, well, just plain wrong. An unforgettable ending, though.
