I really wanted to relish Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen's absurdist sketch comedy set in Portland, America's most bohemian city, and the first episode (featuring a daft, grown-up's hide-and-seek contest in a public library and a decent skit on organic chicken) is strong.
However, for all the enjoyable guest turns (including Steve Buscemi and Kyle MacLachlan), Portlandia too often falls flat and is not half as funny as it clearly thinks it is. It's certainly no The League of Gentlemen, a comedy with real bite.
