It's to do with the stillness, the camera angles, the use of mirrors… and, of course, the mute little boy. The Returned is terrifying, far subtler and scarier than any slashers regurgitated by US cinema of late. The setting is a small Alpine village where various townsfolk – including a teenage girl, a serial killer and a Gallic hunk – are coming back from the dead and looking, initially, quite dandy. Not zombie-like at all. That'll come later. It's best not to give too much away. Magnifique.
