The first six hours of a planned 42 telling the story of a Derbyshire village over the 20th century, and, yes, this first series of Peter Moffat’s drama groaned under its ambition.

Bracketing the First World War, it also sometimes came on as Lawrence-by-numbers against a spick-and-span National Trust backdrop. But its study of female characters across the social scale is striking, helped in particular by the ever wonderful Maxine Peake.
