"You are asking me to extinguish myself," Latif pleads with Uday Hussein. The eldest son of despot Saddam has just asked Latif to be his body double; the soldier is understandably reluctant.

After a bit of torture, he changes his mind, and Latif is effectively "dead". Dominic Cooper excels as both Udays (ripe as deranged Uday; watchful as Latif) in this lurid gangster saga, which is full of torture scenes, sex, bad music and gunfights.

It doesn't appear to have a lot to do with actual reality, and it feels in poor taste with very little feeling for politics, but Tamahori invests The Devil's Double with an admirable zest.
