The best Doctor Who Christmas Special for some years is set during the Second World War where Claire Skinner's plucky Madge Arwell has just learnt their her bomber-pilot husband (Alexander Armstrong) has perished in his plane.

Cue the arrival of the Doctor (Matt Smith) to put things right. The Time Lord whisks Madge's two children off to a snowy wonderland, which, of course, is about to be attacked (by acid rain). The eco-message is a bit laboured, but the central tragedy that powers this scatty episode is a poignant one.
