DVD review: Beasts of the Southern Wild, for retail & rental (Studio Canal)
The recipient of four Oscar nominations, including one for its star, Quvenzhané Wallis (who was six years old when the film was shot), Beasts of the Southern Wild is wild indeed – a dizzying, poetic, sci-fi fairy tale which mixes the reality of life in a remote Louisiana fishing community with a fantasy about prehistoric giant pigs roaming through a post-apocalyptic future. Perplexing as it can be, it's a bracing achievement.
