Film review: Trap for Cinderella (15)

Hard to know what's happened to Iain Softley, who once made Backbeat and The Wings of the Dove, two outstanding films of the 1990s. He's not likely to turn things around with this feeble amnesiac noir.

Tuppence Middleton stars as a party girl who loses her memory after a house fire in rural France. Back home in London she tries to reassemble the puzzle from fragments – her intense friendship with shy Domenica (Alexandra Roach) seems to offer the key.

Based on a novel by Sébastian Japrisot, the film is closer to a rip-off of Single White Female, injected with a heavy dose of Daphne Du Maurier. Middleton is good as the heroine all at sea, but everything else sinks like a stone.
