Where would we be without streaming services? Can you imagine the past 18 months without having exciting new films ready to carry us away from the real world at the touch of a button? It doesn’t bear thinking about. Sofa-streaming has kept us entertained, it’s provided comfort, and given us something worth talking about besides sourdough starters, the never-ending pile of washing up and the new etiquette for shaking hands. And to our great pleasure, the options continue to be bountiful.

Thanks to Sky Cinema’s new offer, Sky subscribers can upgrade their summer nights by joining Sky Cinema for just £11 extra per month. Whatever the state of the world, one thing’s for sure: this is the summer of limitless cinema.

Unlock a whole library of entertainment, from wartime action to stoner comedy, head-scratching whodunnits and comic book spectaculars. Whatever mood you find yourself in, Sky Cinema has something for you, the thrill-seeker, the hopeless romantic, the amateur detective.

Catch these titles to scratch all our movie itches.

Woman power

If it’s thrills you’re after then look no further than Wonder Woman 1984. The sequel to the smash-hit Wonder Woman drops us into the 1980s, the era of excess, big hair, big money and, for Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman, big trouble. Gal Gadot’s warrior princess faces off against the jealous and vengeful Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) whose newly acquired superpowers lead her into an evil alliance with the dastardly businessman Max Lord. With two fiendish foes, Wonder Woman has her work cut out for her this time.

Wonder Woman 1984. Available 27 August.

If you want even more bang, then the candy-coloured Gunpowder Milkshake is like a grenade of pop-feminist anarchy ready to explode onto your TV. Karen Gillan (of Doctor Who fame) stars as a highly-skilled assassin who teams up with a whole group of assassins to take on another, particularly evil assassin who is holding a young woman captive. It’s a post-Tarantino shake of gunslingers, all duking it out in effortless style.

For an overload of doe-eyed romance and all the feels you can handle, try Finding You, a tale of young love, Irish charm and… dragon slaying? Taking a trip to Ireland to find herself, Finley finds so much more when she falls for the star of a Game of Thrones-style TV show being filmed there in the Emerald Isle.

Ralph Spall plays the lovable but entirely complacent Teddy who falls into a time warp where the days and years speed ahead without him, reminding us that time waits for no man, so get busy living.

Keeping it comedy

If the summer of love is not your bag, try the summer of laughs with one of these raucous comedies.

Barb and Star have packed their bags with wacky gags and are heading to Vista del Mar for the holiday of a lifetime in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s riotous Saturday Night Live sketch makes a hilarious transfer to the movies. Fans of the madcap and occasionally X-rated comedy of Austin Powers will have a wonderful time on this trip, where an evil genius and their killer mosquitos threaten to spoil the fun.

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. Available now.

On a similar frequency, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter reprise their cult-characters, the most excellent duo Bill and Ted, and for one last time try to fulfil their destiny to unite the world through music, in Bill & Ted Face the Music. On this, their third adventure through time and space, they are reunited with their old friend Death, and bump into their totally awesome daughters who are on a far-out adventure of their own.

Bill & Ted Face The Music. Available now.

In Superintelligence, Melissa McCarthy is Carol Peters, your average middle-aged American helplessly searching for meaning and purpose in her work and life. When she is selected by an artificial intelligence system (a mean Siri with James Cordon’s voice) as a guinea pig in a test to see if the human race deserves to go on existing, she has to prove to the computer and herself that life, truly, is beautiful.

The kid in question, played by The OC heartthrob Adam Brody, is an amateur sleuth, called upon to investigate the murder of a young man. More Brick and Under the Silver Lake than The Big Sleep or Chinatown, fans of the hard-boiled private eye tales of Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler will get their fix in this smart and modern update on the old gum-shoe thrillers.

Eric Bana stars in Australian thriller The Dry as detective, Aaron Falk, returning to §his rural home to attend the funeral of his brother who murdered his wife and child before turning a gun on himself.
