Robert Redford's Sundance Institute announced on March 15 that it will extend its prestigious film festival to London next year and launch an inaugural film and arts festival at London's O2 entertainment complex April 26-29, 2012.

In a partnership with AEG Europe, which owns O2, Sundance London will screen titles from next January's 2012 Sundance Film Festival and program filmmaker panels. O2 will also schedule music concerts and cultural events at its indoor arena, music club and exhibition space.

Redford, founder of the Sundance festival, said at a press conference in London that the mutual goal was to bring the best in current American independent cinema to the UK, "and in essence, help build a picture of our country that is broadly reflective of the diversity of voices not always seen in our cultural exports."

Since Sundance began in 1978, Redford has expressed interest in taking the annual festival beyond Park City, Utah, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The largest showcase for indie films in the US has begun screening some films via video-on-demand for viewers throughout the US.
