Sir: I was recently asked by an incredulous Canadian visitor whether it was true that everyone in England dealt with their snail problem by lobbing them into next-door's garden. I have taken a straw poll among my acquaintances and can assure her that it is perfectly true. Unfortunately I have five neighbouring gardens, which I think explains why my snail population is currently increasing fivefold.
