Sir: I must protest at the emotional tone of your front-page report on the Omagh bomb. Yes, there has been terrible loss, but what is needed to bring about change is fact, truth, honesty and political will.

My family still bears the loss of someone in the Lockerbie disaster. What will allow us to move on will be good, investigative, fearless journalism which challenges the misuse of power. We do not and never did need permission to grieve. Grief is a very private thing.

Please therefore report the facts, examine the causes, analyse the available steps forward, and please avoid washing any aspect of so important a political event with even the thinnest film of soap.
