"I was always dreaming about something... I dreamed about beauty," Kevin Rowland declares on One Day I'm Going to Soar, Dexys' first album in 27 years. In his "lost" 1990s, dreams must have kept Rowland afloat.
There have been many Dexys: punk-soul rebels in donkey jackets, chart-toppers in dungarees, mavericks in pinstripes. Rowland turned cross-dressing crooner for a solo album, My Beauty, the cover of which offered perhaps a closer view of his pants than the public were ready for. But there have been constants.
The band-name might have shrunk ("Midnight Runners" did a runner) but Rowland's dreams have stayed big, his symphoni-soul aspirations holding true on an album that – in its wit, drama and passion – proves a dreamy comeback for fans who feared one of pop's great roamers might not return.
