Pop gigs of the week: Bestival, Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight
Josie and Rob da Bank's Bestival returns as the little festival that could: spawned from small acorns in 2004 to become the awards-hoovering head honcho of the medium-sized scene, it looks in the year of Glastonbury's rest like the main contender to Glasto's crown as a weekend brimming with vibrant character.
The musical spread this year includes vintage classics New Order and Stevie Wonder alongside festival-fit party-starters Florence, Hot Chip and Orbital. Returning heroes include Sigur Ros, the xx, Bat for Lashes and Spiritualized; potential future headliners include Grimes, Alabama Shakes and Warpaint.
More than most, though, this is a festival at which the peripherals are integral: the claim that "It's not all about the music" bears fruit across a generous sprinkling of comedy, cabaret, roller-disco and, of course, fancy-dress flavourings. This year's theme is "Wildlife", of which, to paraphrase Talking Heads, Bestival's got some.
