The Colombian singer’s tasteful performance outshone J Lo and Pitbull’s appearance at the opening ceremony last month, which saw the Cuban rapper mocked for his tight white trousers.
Shakira, who sang the hit official World Cup anthem “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” in South Africa four years ago, was joined on stage by Brazilian singer and record producer Carlinhos Brown.
Other performers included Wyclef Jean, Carlos Santana, Alexandre Pires, and Ivete Sangalo.
The closing ceremony marked the third time Shakira has performed at the World Cup, having previously sung her hit “Hips Don’t Lie” at the closing ceremony in Germany in 2006.
While “La La La (Brazil 2014)” has not been named the official World Cup anthem at this year’s championship, many prefer it to the official FIFA song “We Are One (Ole Ola)” by J Lo and Pitbull.
Some 223.7 million people have viewed the video to Shakira’s song on YouTube, in comparison to the 189 million who have watched J Lo and Pitbull’s official anthem.
