A Bridge Over You: Charity single recorded by NHS Choir has hopes for Christmas number one spot

A charity single recorded by an amateur choir made up of NHS staff may be in the running for the Christmas number one spot after amassing more than 200,000 online supporters.

With weeks still to go before the official sales race begins on 19 December, the official video of the song by the NHS Choir – which is made up entirely of health service staff – has already been viewed more than 120,000 times on YouTube.

The track, entitled “A Bridge Over You”, is a musical mash-up of the 1970 Simon and Garfunkel classic “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and Coldplay’s “Fix You”, which was released in 2005 and featured on the band’s third album X&Y.

Billed as an “emotional celebration of the thousands of NHS staff who go the extra mile every day”, the video for the song features footage of nurses, doctors and hospital porters caring for patients interspersed with shots of the choir in the recording studio.

All of the proceeds from the release, which is likely to face stiff competition in the race for Christmas number one from the winner of ITV talent show The X Factor, will be shared between the charities Carers UK and Mind. A smaller percentage will also be distributed among smaller charities in the New Year.

The 99p single is already available to download from iTunes and other online retailers, but the organisers of the campaign are urging supporters to wait until 19 December before buying to ensure that every purchase will count towards the Christmas chart.
