Alt-J claim first UK number one album with This Is All Yours

The Mercury Prize winners have beaten Barbra Streisand to take the top spot

Alt-j have achieved their first UK number one album (Adrian Read/Bill/W J Holmes)

Indie rock band alt-J have beaten Barbra Streisand and reached number one in this week’s UK album charts.

This Is All Yours fought off eight new entries and kept Streisand’s duets record Partners at number two.

The band were 5,000 copies ahead of the legendary singer with their album, meanwhile Sam Smith’s soulful debut In the Lonely Hour held fast in third place.

This Is All Yours is the second studio album from the group, who won the Mercury Music Prize for their debut An Awesome Wave.

The three-piece band consists of Joe Newman, Thom Green and Gus Unger-Hamilton, who formed after meeting at Leeds University. Bassist Gwil Sainsbury parted from the group last year on good terms.

Keyboard player Gus said that the band were “over the moon” to see their album at number one.

He went on to say, “It was never something we thought we'd achieve, but it's our fans who have put us there so we owe this to them.”

Other new entries to the album charts this week, included Aphex Twin’s Syro which reached number eight, and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga's collaboration Cheek to Cheek, which came in at number 10.
