Backstage: Introducing Gabe Day - just don’t call him Day-Lewis....

Gabe Day has been attracting much attention in the music community this week for his debut rap track. But much of the focus has not been on the new video, but rather the rapper’s full name, Gabriel Day-Lewis (the son of award-winning actors Daniel Day-Lewis and Isabelle Adjani).

The song, “Green Auras”, focuses on his bipolar condition, drug use (both soft and hard), and the difficulties of his upbringing (“From Europe to the East Coast wasn’t easy to adapt”), and his father. “Call me Gabe Day, and not Gabe Day-Lewis. ’Cause if you’re trying to call me out, I’m about to Gabe-Day lose-it,” he spits, adding – not entirely convincingly – “Judging someone for their dad is just as bad as being racist.”

It’s statements like that which make you think the 18-year-old Day – who has a tattoo of a fork on his hand – may have inherited his parents’ skills as actors, and this is all one big, Joaquin-Phoenix-style hoax.

Day is not, of course, the first son of a hugely popular multiple Oscar-winning actor to turn his microphone to rap.

Chester Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, has released hip-hop tracks under the name Chet Haze. As those tracks were met with considerable derision from the media, Day (if he is serious with his rap ambitions) will be hoping he can make a better impression.

Sophie’s choice role is one to watch

If Sophie Turner is not on your radar yet, it’s likely that she soon will be – the 17-year-old actress from Warwick has just landed her first lead role in a film. This comes after two years playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones.

“I always say my life hasn’t changed that much since Game of Thrones but it has, I think,” she tells me, via email. “It’s gotten me a lot of jobs and a lot of recognition with fans and casting directors.”

One of these jobs is the lead role in Another Me, a psychological thriller by Spanish director Isabel Coixet.

“There is often talk about there not being many female directors, and I agree, [but] what makes Isabel great isn’t her gender but her talent. She is a very inspirational woman ... she connects with[the actors].”

Sophie has also just started shooting on Barely Lethal, with big Hollywood names such as Samuel L Jackson and Jessica Alba, as well as Hailee Steinfled, who, like Turner, is one to watch.

Le Bon looks back on smoking hot days

Duran Duran have been taking a happy trip down memory lane with Careless Memories – a new coffee table book focusing on their Sing Blue Silver tour of 1983-84. “It’s a book of photographs by Denis O’Regan of a great tour,” lead singer Simon Le Bon told me when I bumped into him at Boisdale’s in Canary Wharf this week, where he was named Cigar Smoker of the Year.

“Absolutely [it brought back memories], yes it has – we were so beautiful!”
