They were known for having the biggest boy band rivalry of the Nineties, but now the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC are joining forces for a new “zombie Western futuristic horror movie” from the film studio behind Sharknado.

Nick Carter is to write and star in the post-apocalyptic film, which has the working title Dead 7, about a “ragtag band of gunslingers” fighting a zombie plague.

He will be joined by a number of Nineties pop stars including fellow Backstreet singers Howie Dorough and AJ McLean and *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone.

“My character is still being worked out right now, but I’m a good guy that’s going to help save the day,” Carter told Rolling Stone.

“There’s a wish list of people that I want. I want it to be musically based. I might reach out to Jordan [Knight] from the New Kids on the Block.”

*NSYNC fans hoping Justin Timberlake may make an appearance in the movie will be disappointed. The singer and actor is not involved in the project, with Fatone confirming he is the only *NSYNC boy band member on board “as of now, but you never know”.

Production company The Asylum, which is best known for the cult hit Sharknado franchise, is producing the film.

As for the boy band’s so-called rivalry, Fatone said it had no bearing on the film.

“People always think [we're] some sort of rivals. But it's so funny - there's never been animosity or anything like that. Now we're setting the record straight by doing a film together.“
