Billboard's Hot 100 ranking has tracked the music industry's chart toppers for six decades, during which some artists have emerged as clear frontrunners.

There are several ways to measure a band or a singer's performance among the Hot 100 chart, as some may choose to look at how many times an artist has been included in the ranking, or how many top 10 songs they have acquired.

Another way is to look at how many number one hits a single group or singer have obtained throughout their careers – in which case, The Beatles are the clear winners with no less than 20 number one songs.

Some artists' absence from the top five might come as a surprise: for example, Elvis Presley, despite being a cultural icon, scored "just" seven number one hits, so to speak – although he had 25 top 10 songs and 109 tunes included in the Hot 100 chart overall.

Here are the five singers and bands with the most Billboard Number One songs:

The Beatles – 20

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Fab Four lead the ranking of artists with the most chart toppers, with 20 number one hits in total, as explained by Billboard in a previous analysis.

Some of The Beatles' best known songs are among their number one tunes, such as "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Yesterday" and "Help!" – basically, if you think a Beatles song was a Hot 100 number one, it probably was.

Mariah Carey – 18

Carey occupies the second spot of this ranking, having had 18 songs come in first place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Among her number one hits are her ballad "Hero", her 1999 song "Heartbreaker", and the 2005 "We Belong Together".

Rihanna – 14

The Barbadian singer has scored 14 number one hits between 2006 and 2016.

Some of her best known tunes bolster her spot in this top five, including "SOS", "Umbrella", "Diamonds" and "Work".

Michael Jackson – 13

Jackson takes the fourth place in this ranking with 13 number one songs, all released between 1972 and 1995.

His first chart topper was "Ben" in 1972, while "You Are Not Alone" was the final one in 1995. In the middle came some of his biggest hits, including "Billie Jean", "Beat It", and "Bad".

Madonna / The Supremes – 12

Both Madonna and The Supremes scored 12 number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, meaning their share the fifth place of this ranking.

Madonna's chart topping history started in 1984 with "Like A Virgin" and continued with hits such as "Papa Don't Preach", "Like A Prayer" and "Vogue". Her most recent one was "Music" in 2000.

As for The Supremes, their first number one hit was "Where Did Our Love Go" in 1964. Their most recent one, "Someday We'll Be Together", came five years later, in 1969, following up on tunes such as "Stop! In the Name of Love", "You Keep Me Hangin' On", and "Love Child".
