K-pop boyband BTS are to embark on an “extended break” for the first time in six years, their management has confirmed.

In a statement posted to their official Twitter, Big Hit Entertainment confirmed that the internationally successful South Korean group will soon enjoy a “an official and extended period of rest and relaxation”, adding that the band “have relentlessly driven themselves towards their goal since their debut” and therefore deserve “to recharge and prepare to present themselves anew as musicians and creators”.

The statement also encourages fans not to bother members of the band if they see any of them in public, adding: “Should you have a chance encounter with a member of BTS while they are on vacation, we ask that you show consideration for their need to rest and enjoy their time off.”

“[The break] will also provide them with a chance to enjoy the ordinary lives of young people in their 20s, albeit briefly,” the statement adds.

On social media, the news has given way to an outpouring of love and praise, with fans creating the hashtag #RestWellBTS and suggesting the break was a long time coming. “Finally, the lovely boys are getting their vacation,” one fan tweeted. Another wrote: “The boys who taught us to love ourselves are now having a vacation they deserve. I’m crying.”
