Fresh from his “conscious uncoupling” with Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Martin is back winning over hard-to-get ladies.

The English musician stars as a magicienne’s besotted assistant Christophe in the black-and-white music video for Coldplay’s new single “Magic”.

Martin finally impresses damsel in distress Cecile, played by Zhang Ziyi of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame, by learning how to levitate. He rescues her from the moustachioed, drunk magician Claude (also played by Martin).

The lyrics to “Magic” see Martin sing about being “broken, broken into two”, sparking fans to believe it was written about his failed 10-year marriage to the Oscar-winning US actress.

“If you were to ask me/ After all that we’ve been through / Still believe in magic?/ Oh yes I do,” is another potentially telling line in the track.

Paltrow announced her split with 37-year-old Martin, whom she married in 2003, on her Goop website in March.

“It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate,” she wrote. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate.

“We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children (Apple, 9, and Moses, 7), and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time.”

“Magic” features on Coldplay’s forthcoming sixth album Ghost Stories, due for release on 19 May.
