Coldplay's 'A Sky Full of Stars' music video sees Chris Martin take a stroll through Sydney

Expect colourful balloons and umbrellas and hundreds of whooping fans

Coldplay have unveiled their new music video for current single “A Sky Full of Stars”, after being joined on stage by Kylie Minogue in Sydney last night.

Hundreds of fans responded to a last-minute call on Twitter for extras to star in the video, which sees Chris Martin stroll through the Australian city's streets burdened with guitar, red tulips and a drum-kit.

It’s hard not to notice the similarities with past ‘wandering down the road’ music videos (The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” and The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done” spring to mind).

This one’s much more fun though. Martin’s bandmates join him with colourful umbrellas, balloons, bubbles and confetti – think a childish, cheesy carnival with lots of people whooping. He’s singing about his lover being a “sky full of stars”, what did you expect?

"A Sky Full of Stars" is the second single from Coldplay's sixth studio album, Ghost Stories, which topped the iTunes chart in more than 100 countries worldwide and is this year's fastest-selling album.

Martin spoke about the inspiration for the record, which many believe to be about his recent split from wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

“A lot of is about when you go through something a little difficult and you understand that by staying with it you reach a place of love and happiness and come through better the other side,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Coldplay's last music video, for "Magic", featured Martin singing about being "broken" before finding love with a beautiful female magician.

The British band are set to return to the UK for two sold out gigs at London's Royal Albert Hall on 1 and 2 July.
