David Bowie releases haunting music video for Blackstar single 'Lazarus'

Bowie’s 27th album ★ is out on the singer's 69th birthday

With just a day to go until the release of David Bowie’s 27th album ★ (Blackstar), the rock legend has released the music video for second single "Lazarus".

The video sees Bowie wearing the same bandages as in the video for the album’s titular track, and has a similarly dark feel.

However, the Starman is hospital bound - at least until the second half of the video when he is seen dancing and writing while in a black and silver striped suit. Watch the video below.

The track - which is the only one from the album to feature in the 68-year-old’s musical, also titled Lazarus - was released on the 17 December 2015, while Dexter actor Michael C. Hall performed it live on The Late Show with Steven Colbert just days after.

Bowie’s long-serving producer Tony Visconti recently spoke about the surprising influences behind the album.

“We were listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar. We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved that Kendrick was so open-minded and that he didn’t do a straight-up hip-hop record [To Pimp A Butterfly].

“He threw everything on there, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. The goal, in many, many ways, was to avoid rock & roll.”

Lazarus hit broadway in December, with reviewers noting how slightly bonkers the whole thing was, Rolling Stone calling it a “surrealistic tour de force”.
